• Question: rats are usually disliked animals, how did you grow love for them

      I don’t do any research with rats or any other animals. Can’t say I love rats!

      I think rats have a very bad reputation for being dirty and spreading disease, for example when the bubonic plague spread people blamed rats but it was actually fleas! Rats are actually very clean and I like them because they are incredibly intelligent animals – they can be taught to do very complex memory tasks like solving mazes. I think we have rats to thank for a lot as by using them in research we have learnt loads about the human body/brain and it has allowed us to develop cures for many diseases!
