Health psychology is the study of how biology, psychology, behaviour and social environment have an impact on health and wellbeing. Psychological factors (e.g. stress) can have an impact on our health. Behavioural factors also affect our health, e.g. smoking, drinking too much alcohol, gambling addiction. So by understanding psychological factors that influence health, we can apply that knowledge to improve health. Many health psychologists develop behaviour change interventions, designed to change some aspect of behaviour to improve health (e.g, increase exercise, increase fruit and vegetable intake, reduce smoking). Some health psychologists work in in large-scale public health programs. Future career opportunities for health psychologists are increasing and are available in the NHS, in industry and in academic settings.
